The nation of Israel received some remarkable promises from God. He pledged to "wipe out" the peoples of the land of Canaan (Ex. 23:23, 27-30). They would receive his blessing on their food and water (23:25). God vowed to "take away sickness from among you, and none of you will miscarry or be barren in your land" (23:25-26). He assured them "a full life span" (23:26). The borders of their country would cover a large area "from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the desert to the River", speaking of the Euphrates (23:31). He made it clear, however, that all of these wonderful blessings would be theirs provided they remain faithful to the covenant.
